Getting “Back to the Basics” with “Good Old-fashioned Medicine”
Dr. Spiegel is easy to talk to, loves to get to know his patients, and takes their health and wellbeing to heart. Never one to rest on his successes, he continuously searches for ways to better help his patients achieve their weight-loss goal and maintain their weight loss. Recently, Dr. Spiegel enhanced his office procedure to enable him to spend more one-on-one time with his patients and personally follow their progress. He believes this will further improve each patient’s chance to achieve permanent weight-loss.
“Achieving a healthy body mass index (BMI) is a commitment to a lifetime change. Unlike surgical procedures that only require a couple of follow-up appointments with your surgeon, weight-loss surgery is different,” Dr. Spiegel explained. “Some procedures require more follow-up than others. However, Dr. Spiegel advises all of his patients to schedule follow-up visits at least every six months. This ensures that each patient is receiving the attention that they need to be successful. This is true for both patients who have attained their weight loss goal and those who have undergone a procedure that does not require further adjustments.
“My observation,” stated Dr. Spiegel, “though not scientifically documented, is that some patients regain weight after reaching their weight loss goal because they are not receiving follow-up support. In most cases, these patients simply did not make the time to take advantage of return office visits.” This realization, along with a sincere desire to maintain a connection with his patients, became the impetus that encouraged Dr. Spiegel to find a way to make a difference in each patient’s life and change the current method of interacting with patients in his medical practice.
Dr. Spiegel explained, “We began my bariatric surgery practice called TLC, Texas Laparoscopy Center, in a small town in Southeast Texas. I really enjoyed the small town doctor-patient relationship where I could develop a special bond with each patient and literally provide TLC! I got to know my patients well, and established relationships with their family and friends. It was an ideal way for me to practice medicine, and proved to be good for my patients too.”
After seeing how weight-loss surgery helped patients restore their health and get back into life, Dr. Spiegel wanted to do the same for as many people as possible. News of Dr. Spiegel spread rapidly. His weight-loss practice grew and evolved. TLC was re-named Surgical Weight-loss Specialists (SWS), and multiple offices were opened throughout Greater Houston to better serve patients.
“As we expanded, I realized that I really missed connecting on the personal level that I did when my practice was smaller. My staff and I sat down and brainstormed about how we could achieve the feel of a small medical practice given our growth,” Dr. Spiegel explained. “We developed our ‘Back to the Basics’ program based on an old-fashioned physician/patient medical relationship, which gives me more time to spend with each patients and have a greater influence in their weight-loss journey.” A registered dietician, under the supervision of Dr. Spiegel, was incorporated into the practice as well as the Spiegel Slim store which offers specially formulated vitamins, shakes, foods and snacks for weight loss patients.
Dr. Spiegel stated, “The components of our ‘Back to the Basic’ Comprehensive Program are:
Dr. Spiegel explained “It’s our intention to provide a personal touch to help patients achieve their goal.” “It is quite rewarding to see patients lose weight, reduce or eliminate their need for prescription medications, and become free from life-threatening diseases as well as conditions like back pain and acid reflux.” shared Dr. Spiegel. “It’s just as amazing to see them perform simple tasks like walking upstairs or playing with their kids or grand kids, and in doing so many things throughout their daily lives that people usually take for granted.”
“There is a hereditary aspect to obesity as well as a psychological element,” Dr. Spiegel continues. “It is an uphill battle and unfortunately, those who aren’t genetically prone to obesity don’t understand. Instead, people who struggle with their weight are pre-judged and often discriminated against. It’s absolutely heartbreaking. I am glad that I can offer something that can truly help patients lose weight and break, what is essentially, an addiction to food.”
“I’m here for my patients every step of the way,” Dr. Spiegel added. “Weight-loss is a remarkable and uplifting journey that can change your life, but it takes an effort to get there. The surgery itself is a tool that helps you reduce the amount of food you eat and caloric intake. Your success involves using this tool and making an on-going commitment to change … changing your eating and exercise habits, your relationship with food, your lifestyle, and sometimes, even your friends who were your eating companions.”
